Dub Sharma

Dub Sharma is an Indian music producer, lyricist, and rapper who is known for his work in the Bollywood film “Gully Boy” (2019).

Dub Sharma was born as ‘Siddharth Sharma’ in 1988 (age 32 years; as in 2020) in Chandigarh. He belongs to Chandigarh 1072. He began his professional music career in 2008. He never sold beats but did work as a ghost producer and also worked for commercials. Eventually, he found a medium to produce music and made music for travel and music shows like Sound Trek (2016) and The Dewarists (2017). He released his first solo album, “Vyuh” in 2013.

Apart from this, he has other EPs, Cues (2016) and Showcase (2017). In 2016, he released a song titled Azadi, which sampled the speech of the JNU student activist Kanhaiya Kumar, with a follow-up blog post, ‘I Hope My Song Dies.’ The track became very controversial, earning him criticism from many. In 2017, he composed the music for “Shut Up Ya Kunal,” a talk show by Kunal Kamra. He made his Tamil debut with the song “Rab Di” from the film David (2013).

 

He made his Bollywood debut with the film, Gully Boy (2019) in which, he sang, composed, and wrote songs, “Jingostan Beatbox”, “Azadi” with Divine, “Apna Time Aayega”, and “Jingostan.”

 

He made his web debut with the song “Roshay” from the series, Made in Heaven (2019).

Facts/Trivia

  • Initially, he was a harmonium payer. At the age of 14, one of his brothers from Delhi brought him a software, which helps in making music. From there, he started to make music on his computer.
  • In 2016, his track ‘Azadi’ went viral and garnered him attention from all over India. At the same time, he was also termed as anti-government. Talking about the track, he said,

    I am just an artiste. I think about different things and issues prevailing in society while composing the songs. But when the song reaches the public domain, everyone interprets in their own way.”

  • Talking about how he got to work in Gully Boy, Dub recollects that it was the music director Ankur Tewari, who contacted him via email after hearing ‘Azadi’ (2016) track. He adds,

    It sounded absolutely interesting to me but honestly, I had no idea how far it could go. Then I met Ankur Tewari and (Gully Boy director) Zoya Akhtar for a listening session. I played all that I had in works at that time and that opened way for some more tracks.”
